With his extraordinary experience and dedication to justice, Reuben adds unparalleled depth to BKLW’s capabilities in complex commercial litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and appellate matters.
A courtroom advocate of the highest caliber, Reuben is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has tried over 100 cases to jury verdict. He has argued twice before the U.S. Supreme Court and has handled numerous appeals before the Ninth and Eleventh Circuits. His distinguished career spans decades of high-profile cases involving securities fraud, public corruption, tax matters, money laundering, and capital defense.
After earning his degree from Yale Law School, where he served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal, Reuben clerked for the Honorable Lawrence W. Pierce of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He then worked in private practice at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &Garrison.
Driven by a passion for public service, Reuben transitioned from corporate law to become a public defender. He distinguished himself by defending clients in complex cases ranging from securities fraud to capital murder, earning recognition for his exceptional advocacy and initiative. He was eventually appointed as the Executive Director of Federal Defenders of San Diego, where he managed a multi-million budget and led a team of 140 employees. His leadership extended beyond the courtroom, as he played a pivotal role in shaping federal defense policies as a representative to the Judicial Conference of the United States.

Reuben’s professional accolades are extensive. He has also received several awards for his public service, including the National Association of Federal Defenders’ Terrence F. McCarthy Award for career excellence and the Defender Programs of San Diego’s E. Stanley Conant Award for excellence in representing alleged enemy combatants detained at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.
In addition, among other notable appointments and positions, Reuben was appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court to the Committee to Review the Criminal Justice Act, served as a defender representative to the Ninth Circuit’s Standing Committee on Federal Defenders, and acted as the co-chair of the Defender Services Advisory Group and Representative to the Judicial Conference’s Defender Services Committee.
