Last fall, a BKLW team led by partners Ryan Fraser and Reuben Camper Cahn replaced the second of two prior distinguished firms in the ongoing representation of a man who was charged in a January 2024 indictment with wire fraud. In public statements, the government described the allegations as an $8.5 million scheme of double-booking and bait-and-switch on Airbnb and Vrbo encompassing about 100 properties nationwide. By statute, these federal charges exposed our client to the potential for decades in prison.
Once engaged, BKLW investigated expeditiously and advocated successfully, obtaining the dismissal of his original fourteen counts in exchange for a plea to a lesser charge. Last month, the United States District Court for the Central District of California sentenced BKLW’s client to the minimum, one-year term of probation conditioned on 13 hours of community service without any custody or house arrest. Not only did BKLW’s client never go to jail, his financial penalties, including the mandatory $100 special assessment, totaled $300; no restitution or forfeiture was ordered.
While every representation is unique, this outcome reflects BKLW’s ability to achieve just results in complex, nuanced cases with high stakes. We’re delighted for our client and grateful for the Court’s careful analysis of his case.
In addition to Cahn and Fraser, BKLW’s team included attorney C.B. Rome, paralegals Garrison Giali and Michelle Dillon, and project assistant Landon Russell.
